this site holds a collection of images showing the collaborations, processes, and results developed by r. eric stone. pulling from his experiences in art, photography, design, technology, and performance, he creates unique and evocative live events. eric has designed 100 productions for theatre and opera since 1995.

eric has designed productions in california, illinois, iowa, new york, pennsylvania, minnesota, utah and wisconsin, with work touring across the country. highlights from the last 3 years:

2011 – eric was the associate designer on the usitt usa national exhibition for the 2011 prague quadrennial. he was also a member of the steering committee for that process. in the fall, eric designed the cherry orchard for iowa & ran the redesign of their theatre arts department website.

2012 – eric designed king lear, two gents, complete works... for the great river shakespeare festival; designed stones in his pockets at the utah shakespeare festival; and designed lady m for iowa.

2013 – eric opened out of the pan into the fire, a new work created by the moving company (dominique serrand & steve epp) & iowa; designed king henry v and twelfth night for the great river shakespeare festival; and is continuing a long-term collaboration with ralph lemon.

teacher  
 

eric designs and teaches at the university of iowa, where he is the head of the design program. from 2001 to 2008, he ran the scenic design program at the university of illinois. eric was the resident scenic designer at pcpa theatrefest from 1995 to 2001. in the last 18 years, he has mentored scores of student designers through their own aesthetic and technical growth, teaching in the areas of scenic design, scenic art, rendering, computer aided drafting, computer visualization, digital portfolio creation & web design, model building, hand drafting, and period styles, as well as advising over 100 student designed productions.
